Symptoms of Pregnancy
Though the most common symptom to identify pregnancy is a missed period, but there are several early symptoms of pregnancy signifying the same. These early signs of pregnancy include vomiting, nausea, excessive fatigue and tiredness, and cravings for certain food items that are usually not sought, and frequent urination, especially during the night.
A number of medical pregnancy early signs are also associated with pregnancy. These signs usually occur within few weeks after conception, if at all, and nor all of them occur always. What are the Stages and Duration during Pregnancy?
The typical duration of a healthy pregnancy is usually forty pregnancy weeks, being counted from the first day of the last period, and the birth generally occurs between 37th and 42’nd week. The weeks are divided into three stages of pregnancy, with each stage lasting around three months.
The first stage is from the week 1 to week 12. As fertilization, implantation of the embryo inside the uterus, and initial development of the fetes occurs during this stage, the body undergoes several changes. These changes trigger several symptoms such as morning sickness, mood swings, nausea, darkening of nipples and aureoles, headache, heartburn, and upset stomach without or with throwing up. It must be mentioned though the symptoms are quite common; some women may not feel any symptom at all.
Pregnancy weeks 13 to 28 make up the second stage. It is during this stage when significant growth in the fetes is initiated compelling the organ holding fetes to expand up to nearly 20 times. Although the fetus begins taking a recognizable human shape during the first stage, it is not until the second stage that the movement of the fetes can be felt. This typically occurs between the 20’Th and 21’st week. As morning sickness and other symptoms fade away, most of the women are known to feel energized during this stage. Pregnancy pains in the form of body ache, thigh pain, groin pain, etc and weight gains are also known to start in this stage.
Weeks 29 to 40 signify the third stage. The fetus is known to grow at the most rapid rate with gaining up to 28 grams every day. The shape of the belly changes and it drops as the fetus turns in the downward position while preparing itself for birth. The fetus begins to move quite frequently, and the strong movements may be felt. The rolling of the fetus may also cause discomfort and pain when it comes near to the spine and ribs. Some new body changes which may be visible include swelling of the face, fingers and ankles, sticking out of the belly button, heartburn, shortness of breath, and contraction. As the pregnancy due date comes close, the cervix becomes softer and thinner and prepares itself for birth.
What are the Treatments during the Pregnancy?
Proper treatment is extremely crucial during the pregnancy. The goal of the treatment is to detect any premature birth complications and other potential problems, and prevent them. It is recommended to take a pregnancy guide and schedule the first visit to the doctor during the first six to eight weeks of pregnancy, which is usually two weeks after the missed period. A full physical examination and several tests may be expected during the first visit. A nutritious balanced diet, regular exercises, and sufficient vitamin intake should be ensured through recommendations. However, if a woman’s pregnancy is complicated, the treatment may vary from casual bed rest to testing of amniotic fluid.
What are the Treatments and Risks during Delivery?
The process of delivery is also divided into three stages. In the first stage, contractions begin with the uterus pushing the baby downwards. This is followed by active labor pain in the second stage when the cervix gets fully dilated until the baby is completely delivered. The last stage begins after the birth of the child and ends when the placenta is separated.
If the labor does not initiate on its own, it’s quite common for the practitioners to induce the labor through medications and other techniques. Induction is usually safe. However, it does carry few risks, which may vary depending upon the technique employed. However, it must be mentioned that the physician may also straight away perform C-section seeing the complications.
After the delivery of the baby, it is quite common to experience sore breasts, episiotomy, constipation, hemorrhoids, cold and hot flashes, fecal or urinary incontinence, and heavy vaginal discharge. As it takes months to prepare for the delivery, it takes several months to recover, especially if the birth is by way of c-section. Besides proper rest, a woman should take medicines through recommendations.
How can we define Abortion in Medical Terms?
In medical terms, abortion can be simply defined as termination of the embryo or fetus either naturally or via medical methods. When it is done intentionally, it is usually performed during the first stage than the second, and rarely in the third stage. On the other hand, if it occurs naturally, it is referred as miscarriage.
What is Miscarriage?
Miscarriage can be defined as loss of the fetus spontaneously before 20 weeks of pregnancy. If the loss occurs after the 20’Th week, it is referred as stillbirth. The common causes behind miscarriage include genetic abnormality, failure of the fetus to attach itself to the uterus, weak immune system, and certain pre-existing diseases such as extreme low blood pressure in pregnancy and diabetes in pregnancy, feeble cervix, or abnormalities in the uterus. Consumption of alcohol and smoking is also known to increase the chances of miscarriage.
It must be mentioned that there is no sure shot method to prevent miscarriage. All that can be done is keep the precautions and prevent it from occurring. The known risks should be avoided such as consumption of alcohol or caffeine, being overweight, etc. Keeping the body healthy by eating a nutritious diet, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep is also known to lower the risk of miscarriage. You should also avoid eating processed food items, shark, tuna, excess of cooked fish, and food items containing, sodium nitrate such as bacon, ham or cured meat. It must be mentioned that you should seek proper medical care and treatment as soon as you determine that you are pregnant.
